Last night I dreamed that Tyler and I were visited by a lion. In the dream we are living in our second apartment we rented decades ago, an apartment I liked very much. In the dream I open the door and in walked a male lion with a full mane. He evidently had been waiting patiently for me to open the door. Yes, I was startled. He went directly to Tyler who was sitting at his computer in a room down the hall. The lion, despite his size, jumped on his shoulders, not as a fierce predator, but like a house cat wanting some attention. The dream was actually very quiet. There was no screaming or roaring. The lion moved beautifully with ease and purpose, and no hesitation whatsoever. He knew why he was there.

Surfacing
I recently had a dream where I am walking on the floor of a sea. I am neither worried, nor elated that I am walking under water. What does concern me is that there seems to be no sea life. There is no color, no fish. I am actually walking in a structure made of grey stone. It has no roof and no floor, but it does not seem to be a ruin. I continue to walk through empty chambers and hallways. It is not a large building but the stone work is of high quality.
truly the better part
of my life out-of-doors
but yesterday I heard a new sound above my head
a rustling, ruffling quietness in the spring air
and when I turned my face upward
I saw a flock of blackbirds
rounding a curve I didn’t know was there
and the sound was simply all those wings
just feathers against air, against gravity
and such a beautiful winning
the whole flock taking a long, wide turn
as if of one body and one mind.
How do they do that?
with its cruelty and fear
its apathy and exhaustion
what a puny existence that would be
but instead we live and move and have our being
here, in this curving and soaring world
so that when, every now and then,
mercy and tenderness triumph in our lives
and when, even more rarely,
toward a common good,
and can think to ourselves:
ah yes, this is how it’s meant to be.

Night Prayer and Novena, Day 9
So what would you say to the Holy One?
Novena, Day 8
I have been thinking that if we greet each day with Christ (or whatever word brings a sense of the sacred to you) in our hearts, we should also end our day with "I greet this night with Christ in my heart." I find the rhythm of opening and closing meaningful for that is the ongoing rhythm of this life. We are not static.

Novena, Day 7
"You do not need to know precisely what is happening, or exactly where it is all going. What you need is to recognize the possibilities and challenges offered by the present moment, and to embrace them with courage, faith, and hope."
Novena, Day 6
I did not sleep soundly last night, so this morning I am a little tired. I almost did not attempt to meditate because I was certain I would just drift off to sleep. However, we are encouraged to return to our sitting place whether we feel like it or not. I am grateful for those wise teachers, and I did stay awake. I am also grateful for the small meditating community that gathers with me on Wednesday evenings. They, too, help keep me steadily on the path. You are welcome to join us! Just drop me a note for the Zoom link.

Novena, Day 5
I think that starting my morning, before I even get out of bed, with the statement, "I greet this day with Christ in my heart," is helping to keep me honest. I cannot make that quiet declaration and then begin to complain and worry. I have to move into another direction: the one that clears the way with fidelity and love.
